"You Belong To The City" is a song performed by Glenn Frey, recorded exclusively for Miami Vice in 1985. The song appeared on the first Miami Vice soundtrack and was used in the episode "The Prodigal Son". The song was in fact written by Frey specifically for the show after he guest starred in the episode "Smuggler's Blues" (which also heavily featured his song of the same name).

Notes

  • The song was recorded exclusively for Miami Vice and, other than on the soundtrack album Miami Vice, has not appeared on any other albums. It was, however, released as a single.
  • "You Belong To The City" hit #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 the same week that Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme" dropped out of the #1 spot. The two songs were included on the first Miami Vice soundtrack, which became the biggest-selling TV soundtrack of all-time, and its 11-week run at the top of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart has not been matched by any TV soundtrack since.
  • The song was used (with slightly altered lyrics) in a 1985 Pepsi commercial directed by Ridley Scott that featured Glenn Frey as an unnamed character alongside Don Johnson as James "Sonny" Crockett. Philip Michael Thomas was also supposed to appear as Tubbs, but he was bound by prior obligations to a Sunkist Grape commercial.
  • The rapper Jay-Z sampled the song for his 1998 hit "The City Is Mine".
  • The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 8 days before "The Prodigal Son" was aired. Glenn Frey continued to perform this song in his concerts with the Eagles. Glenn died in 2016.
