Thomas Carter (born July 17, 1953) is an American actor and director, who directed the pilot episode "Brother's Keeper" in the show Miami Vice.


Carter began his career as an actor, making his debut in the Saturday morning show Isis, followed by The Blue Knight, Good Times, M*A*S*H, and What's Happening before receiving recurring roles in Szysznyk and his most famous role, as James "Hollywood" Hayward in The White Shadow, then appearing in Hill Street Blues and his final TV role, in Equal Justice. He began his directorial career on The White Shadow (four episodes), then directed episodes of Fame, St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, Equal Justice (also produced and wrote episodes), Hack (also executive producer), Harry's Law, the TV movie Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, Damages, Brotherhood, Nashville, and the 2016 mini-series remake of Roots. He also directed the movies Metro, Save The Last Dance (with Terry Kinney), and When the Game Stands Tall (with Michael Chiklis).
