The Smiths were an English alternative rock band whose song "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" appeared in the episode "The Rising Sun Of Death" of the series Miami Vice.

CareerEdit

The Smiths were formed in 1982 by Steven Patrick Morrissey (now just known as Morrissey) and Johnny Marr, who recruited in Mike Joyce and Dale Hibbert (replaced by Andy Roarke after one gig). They chose their name as a counter to the more "fancy and pompus" band names like OMD and Spandau Ballet. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1984 and reached #2 on the UK Album Chart. The album cover features a still photo of actor Joe Dallesandro from his 1968 film Flesh. Their other albums, 1985's Meat is Murder, which reached #1 in the UK album chart and #110 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums, (followed by a grueling tour of both the UK and the US), 1986's The Queen Is Dead (#2 in the UK, #70 in the US), and their final album, 1987's Strangeways, Here We Come (#2 UK, featuring "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"). The strain of the tours along with conflicts between Morrissey and Marr caused the band's breakup in 1987, and the deep nature of the rift has prevented reunification requests over the years.
