Lou Diamond Upchurch (born February 17, 1962, Subic Bay Naval Station, Phillippines) is an American actor known as Lou Diamond Phillips (taking his stepfather's surname), who appeared as Metro-Dade Detective Bobby Cruz, partner of Eddie Trumbull in the episode "Red Tape" of the series Miami Vice.
Career
Phillips began his acting career in the 1984 movie Interface before getting his big break in 1987's La Bamba (with Esai Morales and Rosana DeSoto), playing Richie Valens. The next year he appeared with Edward James Olmos in Stand and Deliver, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. Some of his other movie roles include Young Guns (with Terry O'Quinn and its sequel Young Guns II (with Viggo Mortensen), Disorganized Crime (with Ruben Blades, Ed O'Neill, and William Russ), Renegades (with Bill Smitrovich), The Dark Wind (with Guy Boyd and Gary Basaraba), Courage Under Fire, Another Day In Paradise (with Melanie Griffith), and his most recent film, Filly Brown (with Olmos).
His TV career started with a role in the TV movie Time Bomb, then other TV movie roles followed, including In A Class of His Own (with Joan Chen), Gone But Not Forgotten (with Joe Morton and Jon Polito), Lone Rider (with Angela Alvarado), Love Takes Wing, and Angel and the Badman, and series appearances in 24, Numb3rs, SGU Stargate Universe, Happily Divorced (with John Michael Higgins), and his most recent role, in Southland.
Personal Life
Phillips married Julie Cypher in 1987 until their 1990 divorce, when Cypher left Phillips for singer Melissa Etheridge. He was engaged to actress/poker player Jennifer Tilly in the 1990s but they never married. He later married Penthouse model Kelly Preston Phillips in 1997 until their divorce in 2007, though they separated in 2004. They have twin daughters Grace Moorea and Isabella Patricia (born 1997) who live with their mother. Phillips then married Yvonne Marie Boismier in 2007, they have one daughter; Indigo Sanara (born 2008). Phillips has become a professional poker player when he's not acting; in the 2009 World Series of Poker he finished "in the money" in the Main Event, placing 186th and taking home over $36,000 (not including the $10,000 entry fee he paid).
