Joan Anita Barbara Armatrading (born December 9, 1950, Basseterre, St. Kitts) is a British singer-songwriter whose songs "Love By You" (in "Baby Blues") and "Dark Truths" (in "Heart of Night") appeared in the series Miami Vice.

Career

Armatrading moved to England from her native St. Kitts in the late 1950s and by the 1970s she was appearing in a repertory performance of the Broadway musical Hair, then recorded her debut album, Whatever's For Us, in 1972. Her next album took three years to be released, Back To The Night, which featured a six-piece jazz backing band. Her 1976 self-titled album included her only Top 10 single, "Love and Affection". Her style changed to a harder pop sound for her next three albums, released in the late 1970s and 1980s, then released five more to finish out the decade. None of her albums generated Top 40 singles, but her albums frequently reached the Top 20. She continues to record albums and tour, releasing her most recent album in 2010.

Personal Life

Armatrading and life-partner Maggie Butler entered into a civil partnership in May, 2011, in the Shetland Isles, Scotland.
