Melody is the girlfriend of former NYPD detective Clarence Batisse. In 1986 Batisse's former partner Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs reunited with Clarence, but Tubbs (and Melody) saw the hatred Batisse harbored for Tubbs because he failed to lie about a gun used in a shooting that Batisse said was present but Tubbs said was not. Later, Melody heard what Tubbs did for Batisse (reading an IAD report previously denied to him, gaining a confession from one of the suspects that there was a gun during the shooting Batisse was involved in, and going to the Chief of Detectives to get Clarence his job back with full back pay), and told her boyfriend, who was horrified because he set up Tubbs in a shootout with Batisse's boss Wango Mack, but went to correct his mistake.
