Lewis Allen Reed (March 2, 1942 - October 27, 2013) was an American singer-songwriter whose song "Good Night, Ladies" appeared in the episode "The Prodigal Son" of the show Miami Vice.

Career[]

Reed began his career in 1963 as a songwriter for Pickwick Records, then put together a group including John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker named The Velvet Underground, and became a noted influence on rock music despite their lack of mainstream success and instability as a unit. Reed left in 1970 (after Cale left two years earlier) and began his solo career, but it took until 1973 for Reed to have any mainstream success, reaching the Billboard Top 10 with his hit song "Walk on the Wild Side" from his album Transformer (also featuring "Good Night, Ladies"), but the rest of the 1970s brought little commercial or mainstream success. In the 1980s he released four albums with moderate success, including performing at the first Farm Aid concert in 1985. The 1990s continued his adequate performance, but his former Velvet Underground band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, though Reed has not been inducted as a solo act. In 2001 Reed was the victim of an internet hoax, reports claiming he died of a drug overdose (later proven false). Reed continued to tour and record collaboration albums with Metallica and Booker T. Jones up to his death. Reed was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Personal life[]

Reed married Sylvia Morales from 1980 until their divorce sometime in the 1990s, after which he began a long relationship with Laurie Anderson, whom he married in 2008 and remained married until his death on October 27, 2013, at his home on Long Island, New York, from complications from an April, 2013 liver transplant at the age of 71. Reed had no children.
