Edward Matthew Lauter II (October 30, 1938 - October 16, 2013) was an American character actor, with nearly 200 credits to his name, played Metro-Dade Captain Cahill, night-shift watch commander in the episode "Shadow in the Dark" of the series Miami Vice.

CareerEdit

Lauter's credits are extensive, his first appearance was in a 1971 episode of the series Mannix, followed by appearances in Longstreet, The Waltons, Baretta, The Rockford Files (with Joe Santos), Manimal (with Reni Santoni), The Equalizer (with Anne Carlyle) and Keith Szarabajka), Homicide: Life on The Street (with Richard Belzer, Melissa Leo, and Jon Polito), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (with Paul Guilfoyle and Frank Military), JAG (with David Andrews), Cold Case (with Richard Edson), Psych, and his final TV appearance, in the 2012-13 series Shameless.

His equally extensive movie credits include The Magnificent Seven Ride (his movie debut in 1972), followed by The Longest Yard (both the 1974 and 2005 versions (with Chris Rock and David Patrick Kelly), the only actor other than Burt Reynolds to do so), Family Plot (with Karen Black), King Kong, Leaving Las Vegas (with Graham Beckel), Thirteen Days (with Lucinda Jenney), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (with Gary Cole), The Promethus Project, The Artist (with Penelope Ann Miller), Trouble With The Curve, and his final movie appearance, in 2013's Blind Pass.

Lauter died on October 16, 2013 in Los Angeles, California from mesothelioma, a form of cancer associated with asbestos exposure, at the age of 74.
