Charles Stanley Dutton (born January 30, 1951) is an American actor, producer & director, who appeared in the show Miami Vice as NYPD Lieutenant Pearson, who skeptically works with Crockett & Tubbs (but takes no action in the Revilla's case) in the episode "The Prodigal Son", and Ed McCain, mentor to Archie Ellis (played by Vincent Keith Ford) in the episode "The Good Collar".
Career
Dutton was born in Baltimore, Maryland. In his teens, he was tried and convicted of manslaughter. While in prison, he read an anthology of works from black playwrights. He then began a theatre group in prison, but only if he got his GED. He eventually went to Yale, where was a member of the Yale Reparatory Company, performing in several plays before receiving a Tony nomination for his Broadway debut role in the play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in 1984. He made his debut on film in the film Cat's Eye, followed by roles in No Mercy (with Jeroen Krabbe & Gary Basaraba), Crocodile Dundee II, Q&A (with Luis Guzman & Paul Calderon), Alien 3, Rudy, A Time To Kill (with Oliver Platt), Blind Faith (written by Frank Military and with Lonette McKee, 2009's Fame, Legion, Bad Ass (with Ron Perlman), The Obama Effect, Least Among Saints (with Laura San Giacomo), Carter High, and his most recent film appearance, Carter High.
Dutton's TV debut came in an episode of The Equalizer (with Keith Szarabajka & Mark-Linn Baker). Other TV appearances include Cagney & Lacey before getting the starring role in the comedy Roc, which lasted for three seasons, with half of the last season being broadcast live. Dutton also produced the last season of Roc, then starred in the Jack Reed series of TV movies (with Brian Dennehy & Michael Talbott), then appeared in recurring roles on The L Word (with Pam Grier), Threshold, and won Emmys for Best Guest Actor for his roles in The Practice (2002) & Without A Trace (2003). Dutton also directed episodes of Sleeper Cell & The Corner, Zero Hour (with Zach Grenier), Longmire (with Lou Diamond Phillips), and his most recent TV appearance, 2015's A Novel Romance.
Personal life
Dutton married actress Debbi Morgan in 1989, they divorced in 1994 (no children) and Dutton has not remarried.
