Albert Lombard (1944-1989) was a crime boss, running every kind of gambling operation from poker, roulette, blackjack, cockfights, bare muscle matches, etc. He was part of the Librizzi crime empire, working for the senior Librizzi until his death, when his son Frederico Librizzi took over.

Barbara Carrow/LibrizziEdit

Lombard began running numbers in his teens, eventually moving up the ladder in the Librizzi empire, living by one rule, if he's owed, he's paid, bottom line. Lombard worked in New York around 1969 and successfully eluded NYPD custody, then moved to Miami, where he began taking on partners, mainly Vincent DeMarco, who became his trusted lieutenant. In 1984, DeMarco was brought down by Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs as payback for setting up his friend James "Sonny" Crockett. Also, Crockett's friend Barbara Carrow was killed for gambling debts by someone in the Lombard organization, though it was never definitively answered who killed her. Crockett blamed Lombard for her death (and he admitted her death "caused a lot of heat") and reluctantly helped guard the crime boss' life in 1985 when he was compelled by a grand jury to testify against his boss, Librizzi, who assumed command of the crime empire after his father's death. Lombard did not feel comfortable working for someone so young and green, but most of Lombard's entourage turned against him, including his close confidante Charlie Fusco, forcing Lombard into protective custody until the grand jury. Lombard's son, Salvatore "Sal" Lombard, demanded his father testify against Librizzi to prove himself , however, Lombard pleaded the fifth, despite immunity from prosecution, and fled, followed by Librizzi gun men, and was assumed killed.

Lombard's DeathEdit

In 1989, four years after fleeing Librizzi, and spending several years "on the lam" in Sicily, Morocco, and Jamaica, Lombard came back to Miami to see his son, Sal, who is now married to Rita and

has a son, Tommy. Lombard is eager to reconnect with his son and spend time with his grandson, leaving the mob life behind him. However, Rita is not pleased that Lombard is back in Sal's life, feeling his lifestyle and criminal background would be harmful to Tommy and Sal. Unknown to either Al or Rita, Sal is involved with his own criminal dealings, including stealing the HAVOC device and selling it to illegal arms dealer Hans Weitzler. Preliminary to Lombard's return to Miami, Librizzi bribed Judge Sackheim to have the contempt charges from 1985 dismissed on false grounds, "in the interests of justice due to Mr. Lombard's failing health," even though Lombard was in perfect health. Although Lombard thought his own lawyer was behind these arrangements, it was actually Librizzi baiting a trap for Lombard to think it was safe to come back to Miami. Once Librizzi knew Lombard was back, he sent a hit team to kill him on the Miami Riverwalk. However, Sal was killed in this attack while saving Al's life. At this point Crockett and Tubbs offer to take down Librizzi lawfully, because Librizzi is under pressure to deliver the HAVOC device to Weitzler, as long as Lombard doesn't try to kill Librizzi in revenge for the death of Sal. Librizzi's hit team again tries to kill Lombard, this time in his Key Biscayne home. However, Lombard kills them first, and in an act of defiance, dumps the body of one of the hitmen from a helicopter into Librizzi's pool -- while Librizzi and his girlfriend are swimming in it. Lombard makes additional attempts to reconcile with Rita and Tommy, but twice Rita sends Lombard away, blaming him for Sal's death and fearing his enemies would never leave them alone. Finally, Lombard agrees to cooperate with Miami Vice to bring down Librizzi and promises Crockett he will not kill him. On the day Crockett and Tubbs, as Burnett and Cooper, meet Librizzi to trap him with the HAVOC device, Lombard suddenly appears and reaches into his jacket saying to Librizzi: "this one's for my son." Librizzi and his men fire first, mortally wounding Lombard. Crockett and Tubbs return fire, killing Librizzi. Crockett then discovers that Lombard wasn't even armed and asks him why he did it. Lombard declares that he kept his word to Crockett, since it was Crockett, not he, who killed Librizzi. With his dying breath he tells Crockett that he had to do it, and asks him to explain things to Rita and Tommy.

Personal LifeEdit

Lombard came from humble origins and his entry into the world of crime was propelled by the fact that he saw his own father work long hours at menial, low paying work, and decided that that life was not for him. Over his lifetime Al developed a knack for cooking, insisting on fresh ingredients in his dishes. Lombard was married but never disclosed what happened to the marriage. His son, Salvatore "Sal" Lombard (1965-1989) never knew his true dealings until he was in college, then, became estranged and distant after his father refused to testify against the Librizzi crime family. Sal would later claim that Al lied to him while growing up, so much so that he had to read the newspapers to know what was going on in Al's life. Sal would attend law school at the encouragement of Al, but ultimately began engaging in criminal pursuits, much to Al's disappointment. Sal countered that Al was a hypocrite, and at one point said Al couldn't dislike who he was because Sal was just like him -- i.e., a criminal. Al attempted to reconcile with Sal before Sal's untimely death, when Sal threw himself into a hail of bullets meant for Al. After Sal's death Al reached out to Sal's wife, Rita, who rebuffed his overtures out of fear that Al's enemies could cause problems for what was left of her family. Lombard had a grandson, Tommy, that he got to see briefly before his death, and in a foreshadowing of his own death, told Tommy that his daddy loved him, and his Grandpa Al loved him, even though they would not be there for him. Al's last act was to protect his grandson from the world of crime by sacrificing himself to Librizzi, who was then promptly killed by Crockett, thus ensuring that Librizzi would never harm Tommy or Rita.

Role in ViceEdit

The character of Lombard served, alongside other recurring enemies such as the Calderone cartel, Frank Hackman, Frank Mosca, or William "Captain Real Estate" Maynard, as one of the series' more influential villains. In addition to appearing in three episodes (the most of any recurring villain), Lombard's criminal empire is constantly mentioned throughout the first season, being further investigated by the Organized Crime Bureau in the episodes "Golden Triangle (Part II)" and "Nobody Lives Forever". Lombard's character also experienced the most progression of any villain in the series. Initially, Lombard is presented as a cold, calculating criminal. Later, his more human side emerges, including his parental frustration at the estrangement from his son and his adherence to his own personal code of honor -- omerta or the code of silence -- even though it protects less-honorable men who want him dead, such as Librizzi. Ultimately, Lombard attempts to re-connect with his family and renounce his life of crime, but is killed in an act of self-sacrifice in order to protect his grandson Tommy from the criminal world -- the only world he had ever known for himself. Lombard's relationship to Sonny Crockett also progresses. At first, Lombard is just another criminal to take down. Then he becomes a witness to protect. Finally, Lombard becomes an unlikely ally in the plan to take down Librizzi, Lombard going so far as to trust Crockett with the life of his grandson. Of all the villains in the series, Crockett only displayed genuine regret at the death of Lombard.
